Don’t get me wrong, I liked this book. The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson is gripping, strange, and unforgettable. But the story feels split in two: the rise of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair and the quiet horror of H.H. Holmes. One book shows brilliance, ambition, and the building of the White City.
