We wanted to create an establishing shot with a lot of depth. So we composed a scene with a dynamic camera angle and animated clouds. Sometimes these sorts of establishing shots can be a little flat or even boring. So it was important we made it as dynamic as the rest of the film. We accomplished this by creating parallax with the clouds & cables as the character runs down them. By doing this, we can establish a scene while also capturing an action-packed moment. This shot was composed from a sequence of very flat cuts that in succession, create the illusion of continuous movement with dynamic beats 🤌 There was a thought that the blue flame energy in this shot might be read as water, so the effects animator Matthieu Petit paid careful attention to make sure the movement of the effects was clearly fire despite being blue. This shot was a real mix of techniques. A 2D hand releases a 3D flower into a hand-painted stream. We then transition to a hand-drawn version of the same stream with a BG wipe, then hand off to a 3D starfield, wipe with a 2D FX transition into a 3D flower floating on a 2D stream... on a painted background. This shot had to be highly detailed because there were no backgrounds. The animated Monster took up the whole screen. We used Blender to interpolate between key drawings, resulting in the level of detail needed for the shot! It was a quite a challenge to come up with a solution to how we would depict the "upgrade" that the ship's crew brings into town. At one point we had an underground pool of energy where the crew and townsfolk would give respects, there was windmills and canals that would be augmented with new machinery and power the city in different ways. This Rubik's cube was a challenge to get right! Jake, the animator on this shot, had to work backwards from the solved Rubik's Cube. When he coloured it, he considered what colour each side would be, even the ones out of the camera’s view! So he pretty much solved a Rubik's cube in his head to make this shot work - pretty cool.
