As for converting to word, it's going to be a mess as word doesn't do the same stuff as publisher. You can always try to save as a word file from publisher but IIRC it only saves the text frames.

Microsoft Publisher and Microsoft Word may be Office Suite bosom buddies, but that doesn't guarantee flawless interaction between the two when you want to open a saved document in the other program.
